Holsteiner sire Caretino has been put to sleep aged 28 years, just three months before his 29th birthday.
The son of Caletto II had been unwell for over a week and, despite efforts to help him, he did not show signs of recovery.
Caretino was considered one of the most important Holsteiner sires in the world. He was a Nations Cup and major international winner with Denmark's Bo Kristoffersen before going on to successfully compete with Germany's Ludger Beerbaum.
Caretino's offspring include: Swedish rider Rolf-Goran Bengtsson's Casall la Silla, Brazil's Bernado Alves' Chupa Chup, Richard Spooner of the USA's Cristallo and former World Champion Jos Lansink's Caretano Z among many others.
