Team Murka and World Class Programme to sponsor under-23 championship

Adapted from BS

A new joint sponsorship between Team Murka and the World Class Programme will allow the top British under-23 riders to compete at Olympia, The London International Horse Show in a championship on Saturday, 18 December 2010.

The competition is open to riders aged 23 years or under, with a total of 24 riders qualifying for the final. The top 11 horse and rider combinations will come forward from three qualifying competitions, based on league points accumulated from each combination's results. Points will only be awarded to riders who are currently eligible for British team selection.

In addition, the five horse and rider combinations from the 2010 British Young Rider Team will automatically qualify, together with the top six horse and rider combinations from the 2010 British Open World Class Development Championship who are currently eligible for British Team selection. If any of these riders wish to jump a different horse at the final they will be required to go through the qualifying process. Two further riders will be awarded wild cards.

The final will carry a prize fund of £10,000, plus training vouchers and a style prize, which will be judged during the first round of the competition. The winner of the style prize will receive a voucher to the value of £1,500 towards the purchase of a saddle, for use in conjunction with the World Class Programme Master Saddler and the Pliance System.

As part of its sponsorship, the BEF World Class Development Programme is funding the first place prize money at the qualifying competitions, as well as training vouchers to the first six prize winners, who are currently eligible for British team selection.

The qualifiers will be held at Solihull Riding Club's Elite Show (30 September - 2 October), Aintree International Equestrian Centre's Premier Show (4-7 November) and Addington Manor Equestrian Centre's Premier Show (24-27 November).

“Team Murka is proud to support the future of British Showjumping and to provide another exciting championship for Olympia to showcase the best,” said Team Murka founder Olga White.

Will Connell, performance director of the  Equestrian World Class Programme, added: “This class will showcase Britain’s very best under-23 show jumping talent at one of Britain’s very best shows.
“I am very pleased that Team Murka have agreed to support the class. Team Murka, through Peter Charles and Murka's Pom d’Ami, have been one of the mainstays of Great Britain’s success in the 2010 Meydan Nations Cup series.”

Team Murka is committed to pursuing excellence in both yachting and showjumping. They are a privately funded team, which allows them the flexibility to move with sleek agility and keen awareness to identify and encourage talented athletes within both sporting disciplines.

They are currently involved in upgrading the main Equestrian Complex of the Central Russian Army Sporting Club in Moscow, plus the organisation and prize money for a series of summer and winter show jumping competitions held at the facility. The main objective of these competitions is to raise the level of involvement and the standard of show jumping in Russia, including children, juniors, young riders, amateurs and professionals. They sponsor British rider Peter Charles, his family and his team; a national Russian rider and a young Russian rider.

The World Class Development Programme is Lottery and Exchequer funded via UK Sport, and seeks to identify and develop talented athletes who have shown the potential to reach the world stage. The programme underpins World Class Performance and, together with the Equine Pathway, they comprise the Equestrian World Class Programme; incorporating the three Olympic sports of dressage, eventing, showjumping and the paralympic sport of para-equestrian dressage.
