Beezie Madden wins Spruce Meadows World Cup qualifier

The USA'a Beezie Madden Madden gained valuable World Cup points with her 13-year-old Holsteiner mare Mademoiselle by winning Spruce Meadows' qualifier yesterday.

Twelve of the 28 starters went clear over Werner Deeg's course, the German course-designer having been mindful of heavy rain earlier in the day.

"I think Werner thought a bit too much about the rain and made the first round a bit too nice," said Beezie. "But the jump-off was more difficult."

Mexico’s Jaime Geurra and his 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Taunus set the time to beat early in the jump-off at 38.76 seconds.

"I only got the horse four days ago," said Jaime. "It’s the first time I’ve been in the ring with him."

With a little rookie luck, he put the pressure on the rest of the entry.

Beezie came out gunning with Mademoiselle, eating up the eight jumping efforts over the 340 metres of course in 37.77 seconds, bumping Jaime from top position.

American team mate Ashlee Bond and her 11-year-old Zangersheide gelding, Chivas Z followed. Their finish time of 38.11 seconds wasn't good enough to steal the win, but was rewarded with second place.

Madden and Bond are now feeling confident about Saturday’s BMO Nations Cup.

"We always feel good before it starts," said Beezie.
