The weekend's big winners

This year's international circuit got underway at the weekend with the biggest show being hosted in the UAE, the Dubai CSI***W (6-8 January 2011).

Abdullah Al Sharbatli, silver medallist at last year's Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, headed the Arab League World Cup qualifier with the faster of two double clears by 0.09 seconds. He was riding Columbia 11, who will be familiar to those on the British circuit. Formerly owned by Mike Dawson, Columbia has been ridden by Scott Smith, Robert Smith and most recently Jackson Reed-Stephenson.

Ireland's Cian O'Connor was fifth with Larkhill Cruiser and was also the winner of the Longines accumulator with Arabella. Together with a first place in a Grand Prix qualifier,  with Larkhill Cruiser, these results gave him enough points to secure the show's Leading Rider Award.

"It was a great start here in Dubai to have two wins and take the Leading Rider title," said Cian. "Also, I was extremely happy with the way Splendor jumped with my Egyptian pupil Ahmed Tolba taking second place in the Grand Prix. A perfect start to the Gulf Tour."
