Guy Williams wins on his Spruce Meadows debut

Britain's Guy Williams headed the first day's 1.60m Finning Welcome jump-off class with Belinka van het Overlede Goed on his first visit to the Spruce Meadows Masters.

Venezuela's Leopoldo Palacious designed the course and only three of the 27 starters went through to the jump-off.

Guy and his nine-year-old daughter of Skippy II went into the lead and were followed by
Belgium's Rik Hemeryck, another Spruce Meadows first timer, on Quarco de Kerambars. Like Guy, Rik went clear again, but he was 0.15 seconds slower to finish second ahead of Dutchman Jereon Dubbeldam (BMC van Grunsven Simon), who finished with five faults.

“It’s an honour to come here and to win on the first day,” said Guy. “It’s a lovely ring and a nice show.”

Venezuela's Pablo Barrios took the first class of the day, the AKITA Drilling Cup, with G&C Lagran after a jumping off against eight rivals.

“He’s very fast, he’s a winner,” said Pablo of his Oldenburger gelding. “I always like Leopoldo’s courses, he makes you work. If you have a horse like this it’s fine.”
